I want to go to school for medical counseling, but I'm not quite sure what to major in or where to find information on this subject. I want to deal with cancer patients. I was told today that I would need to go to grad school to get my Masters in psychology. Is that true? Please help!

You could get a Masters in Social Work and do your field placements in hospitals or hospice to get appropriate experience.

That may be true, however your chosen field, medical counseling , leaves an open door for interpretation. To whom will you counsel? The patients? The doctors? Do you wish to specialize in prevention? Who is signing your paychecks?
I believe that an associates in nursing science will greatly benefit your patients in several ways; you will be able to give an informed answer with nursing experience and will give you a hands on psychological perspective as I suspect your current experience includes familial dealings with cancer. This route will give you a more well rounded addition to your teachings and a very valuable addition. Good Luck!

that is true, but you also need to think if you need a medical degree so you would know what is wrong with the person. i say this because to be a counselor you have to get a degree in psychology. if you want to do something in the medical field, you need a degree in nursing, so either or i guess, but i would probably go with psychological.

It would be best to double major in Psychology and Pre-Med or Biology. That would be a lot of work though. And yes, you would have no choice but to go to grad school.
