Two ways- you can use a distortion pedal (run a line from your guitar to the pedal, and one from the pedal to the amp). Some amps have a 'distortion' setting built in, or...you can crank your amp all the way up. Of course, that might damage the amp, so I wouldn't necessarily recommend that. Boss makes some nice distortion pedals, and they're inexpensive- check eBay.

Buy a processor.
I just paid $80 for a Digitech RP150, but there are cheaper ones on the market. Any guitar store will have them.
The guitar plugs into the processor and the processor plugs into the amp. It has 2 foot pedals to scroll up and down the different sounds available. Mine has 50 including all kinds of distortion, reverb, flang, worm, swells, etc... as well as 30 tone and 30 effects adjustments.

first, an overdrive is a tube's sound when its saturated, a distortion is your clean sound clipping depends what you want to play for my tastes distortion is easier to play with because you cant really hear all your notes ( they are clipping) so you wont have the same details, i preffer a distortion when i have no choices but with a hot pickup and a massive load of gain i would go with an overdrive turn up the mid's on your amps you should begin to start sounding like slayer but its really your personal choice, and what you have/ can afford . play around with gear, guitars, amps you'll end up finding an amp that will sound the way you want it. i preffer a marshall they can be insanely versatile on the crunch and boost chanel. try em out!

If you have a disortion setting on your amp turn it on or they have a nice pedal at amazon.com for 15 dollars that is cool that you can put your electric guitar through.

if you have humbuckers on your guitar, put the amp on overdrive and switch your pickups to the humbuckers.
if you have regular pickups, do moderate crunch on the amp and use an overdrive pedal. I suggest the tubescreamer or the Big Muff Pi.
