The plumber replaced our shower faucets and shower head. We used to have an $11.00 water-saving head and he gave us a moderately priced head that has 2 "speeds". (nothing too fancy)
Today I seemed to have run out of hot water (during an 8-minute shower) and the water hasn't drained out yet- very slow draining. Is the new head really that wasteful, or do we need to have him come back & check things?

All showerheads sold in the US are limited to 2.5 gal/min or less. Unless the plumber altered it someway, you may have an issue with your waterheater.
About 60%of a typical shower is hot water. Even at full hot, in 8 minutes, you would have gone through less than 20 gallons of hot water.
Knowing what brand and model shower you have would help. Some have an anti-scald device that prevent the water from being turned too hot. You may need to adjust yours a little. Be sure not to exceed 120 degrees F.

I agree with kiwi, a shower head does control flow, but a hot water heater can easily build up calcium from hard water close to the burner plate and greatly reduce the shower time & increase the time to recover.

I don't like water savers, they are mandated by the gov. ( just a restricting device) but it can easily removed.

It is probably wasting water, but if it doen't cost anything its worth the call.

Could be something wrong with the water heater, too.
