It is very nice that you don't want to hurt her, it shows that you are a caring person.
She is obviously desperate for friendship. Are you close enough to a teacher to ask one to have a talk with the girl? Maybe point out that she smells. The unpopular part shouldn't matter, but the smelling part definitely does.
Maybe you could just ask her to stop following you. Tell her it makes you uncomfortable.

There is this girl at my school the exact same way. I tried avoiding her but that didn't really work. If there is a brand new kid at your school, introduce the new kid to her and then the new kid will make friends(because she doesn't know how uncool she is) then leave them both.
Or you can just try explaining it nicely and not being afraid of hurting her feellings. Or you can just let her do this to you every single day how she is doing now

Try being a real friend to this girl. Talk to her. She probably looks up to you. Give her some suggestions for beauty tips, shampoo, soap, makeup, clothes, etc.

I would tell her nicely for her to leave you alone and that you don't like her following you around.
