My sister is writing a story about a family living on a ranch in 1887.
Near the end, one of the ranch hands is going to propose to the daughter of the ranch owner.
Would the man give her a ring back then? If not what? Any help you can give would be great!!!

Maybe. The wealthy did give rings (or other jewelry such as a brooch although this was falling out of favor by this time). However, your ranch hand is likely poor and could not afford a ring. Some of it depends on the the ranch hand- did he know it was important to impress his boss and save up for a ring? Is their an heirloom ring in his family? Did he buy a cheap ring?

It would not have been unusual for the poor to not give an engagement ring but rahter only a wedding ring. Towns tended to be small back then so word of mouth or posting the "banners" in the newspaper would have been common to announce engagements. Also, engagements usually lasted only a few weeks to 3 months.

Yes he would give her a ring, unless he's too poor... Then I think they'd use something else. But yes the man would give her an egagement ring...
