A gyno/pelvic exam is more uncomfortable than painful. The doctor (if male) will have a nurse with you during the entire exam. Usually they will check your breathing, heart, pulse, blood pressure and breast exam. For the gyno exam, the doctor will have you put your feet into stirrups and scoot your bottom to the end of the table. The actual gyno exam takes about a minute and then all done! I've been to the gyno many many times and the worst part is sitting in the exam room waiting for the doctor. Good luck!

Actual Gyno Exam

i have to say the most uncomfortable part for me is having to take all my clothes off. I am not fond of my body and that is a real embarassment to me. beyond that the best piece of advise I can give you is to just relax. my gyno asks me if I have been sexually active, do I need to test for STD, then she does breast exam, listens to my breathing, then pushes around on my lower abdomen, then does the internal exam and pap smear. I have to say, I never even really feel the paper smear thing like most of my friends do. The worst part to me is the little contraption they use to do the pap smear. Looks like duck bill type thing that acts opens up the vaginal canal etc. so the doctor can swab for pap test.

you should be done in 30 min or so. just be honest with the person.

It's not as bad as you think. It goes pretty quick. They will have you lay down on the table and then you will put your leggs in sturups. They use a metal thing to open up and make sure your insides are ok.It may be cold but if so tell them they can warm it up.Try to relax it doesnt hurt at all. After the first three or so you will begain to feel better.good luck and dont worry and relax.

Try to relax as much as you can. Every woman hates this and dreads it. It shouldn't hurt but it will be a little uncomfortable. You will get through it and then you have a whole year until you have to worry about it again. Good luck

I can't lie, it does not feel great! I found that relaxing is key to making the best of it. Try to think of nice thoughts, not what the doc is doing. I had a few bad paps then switched to a male doc that is much more gentle. If you think the doc is to rough tell them.

While it's true that most doctors understand the sensitivity of the situation and they are very helpful and patient and kind, I'm not gonna lie - it hurts... and least it does me and the women I know...

I find it best to just breath and focus on something else... try reading a magazine.

Sweetie, relax. It will not hurt, and they won't ask any really embarrassing questions. These doctors are usually very patient (no pun intended *g*), and they are used to nervous patients. So don't worry. It will be fine!
