Winesburg, Ohio??

I'm reading a book called Winesburg Ohio and am having trouble understanding..
I am now reading the sparknotes version, I would like to know if you have any suggestions,
i have a test tomorrow, it's last minute but please help me!?

Its is a really hard book to read... Umm the only real advice I can give you is that in most of the stories the plot is the man realizing some important part of him self. Like when he tries to be with helen white (i think thats her name???) He realzies his need to mature and want for companionship
