12 feet of snow is equal to about 2 feet of rain, in terms of mass of precipitation. 24 inches of rain in a few days is possible, but rare. In the mountains, warm moisture loaded air might updraft into a much cooler area at high elevation, which might trigger a dumping of all that moisture on the mountains as snow.

I think it depends on where you are. I read last night that Upstate New York got 12 feet, and other parts got as much as 19 feet. I am in Ohio and only got about 4 1/2 inches and expecting another 5 inches by tomorrow.
