I'm not sure, but I know that I wouldn't want to eat an ice cream cone while sitting in a dirty outhouse.

There is a common misconception that there is no relation or connection between taste and smell. However, this activity demonstrates that the sense of smell plays a large role in the quality of our sense of taste. The nose and the mouth connect at the back of the throat, so when we place food in our mouth, the vapors from that food are able to enter the nose. Since there are many more receptor cells, or specialized cells that allow our brains to interpret the taste and smell of the chemicals in various substances, in the nose than there are in the mouth, our sense of smell is much more sensitive than our sense of taste. Therefore, what our brain interprets as the flavor of a food is really a combination of our brain’s interpretation of both the taste and the smell of that food.

Taste is complex. It depends on 2 things...the receptors in your nose and sinus cavities and the taste buds in your tongue. The taste buds in your tongue sense salty, sweet, bitter and sour, along with hot (spicy). The receptors in your nose give you all those subtle nuances...for example being able to taste the difference between oranges and tangerines.
I have really bad sinuses and I often lose my sense of smell. When that happens all I can taste is what is going on with my tongue. I can tell if it is sweet or sour, but I couldn't tell the difference between a cherry candy and a mint one.
