Get "The Writers' Year Book." You can submit poems and short stories knowing what various publishers are looking for. Find poetry contests on the Net. That's an excellent way to break in.
Never "pay" a publisher. No one's going to read it except you.
Bona fide contests for poems and short stories are the best way to break in. Published friends of mine say they've received more money and recognition from entering and winning contests than from the royalties of their well criticised books.

Go to Barnes and Noble and there's a section thats got some of the info your looking for. Books on how to get manuscripts, playwrites, and anything else published. I'm sure you'll find a book to help with what your looking for, and you can sit with it at the store so that will save money. Have you tried local papers? Also there a different variety mags and such out there always looking to publish unknown writers, don't know who they are offhand but I have seen ads in various poetry and short story mags. Good luck...don't ever let go of your dreams that's what keeps us going.

look into buying yourself a writer's market book or go to the library and check one out, there is always a copy at the library, look inside those and find places that accept unsolicited work. there are many places that do not look for money upfront, find them.

Check Writer'sMarket. There's a website and a book. They both help find agents, contests, et cetera.
