There is a fish illness called popeye that is treatable. But with the gills being swollen, I am leaning more towards that the fish has dropsy. This is different and is common in betta's or chinese fighting fish. Dropsy normally does not respond to treatment and the fish are usually best destroyed. But since it's a betta and he is probably alone in his tank and your not worring about it spreading to another fish I would say you have 2 choices. You can go to any pet store and buy the treatmeant and see if it works. Or you can distroy the fish. This doesnt mean flushing it. You only flush already dead fish. I hate to discribe this, but I will tell you the humane way of putting down a fish, you scoop them up in their fish net and then wack the net hard on a table or counter. This will instantly kill the fish and it wont sufficate to death from being in a dry pipe somewhere. Or being instantly pumped into sewage water. The fish more than likely already had the illness and with the stress of bringing it home caused it to surface at this point. Sorry about your fish and good luck.

He can be treated, but the cause has to be identified - there are several. See this link: http://www.flippersandfins.net/pop-eye.htm

If the cause is bacterial and you go the ampycillin or Maracyn-2 route, G is right, the cost will be about $8-10. But there are other causes that can be treated for free, just by changing some things with tank equipment. You're the only one who can figure out the cause and decide on the appropriate treatment!

Good luck!

your fish is sick and probably won't be around much longer. flushing it isn't very humane. you can try treating it with antibiotics that will cost about 12.00. i have one with an eye like that is perfectly healthy otherwise.

AWWW, don't flush it! You know just as well as I do that it deserves to live. Even if you don't like it! Please keep it, it will make me sad if you don't.
If you really don't want it, give it to a pet store, or to someone who wants it.

Best wishes!
