er, since you're putting it the indonesian section, i'd recommend you to go to bali. many non-balinese people have moved to bali to pursue the arts, especially wood and stone carving.
jogjakarta is another place i'd recommend, since it's very laid back (er, at least compared to jakarta), and it has great batik art, plus living cost is low.
like bear suggested, you could go to jepara too, it's renowned for its wood (and woodcraft).

umm...wondering why you put it in Indonesia section...
Ubud is indeed artistic-oriented place...(Ubud is small area in Bali island)
You can also try Jepara (an area in Java island, famous for its wood craft)
That is all I can recommend...
