I am from Brazil and yes sometimes I am afraid. :) But again, bad things can happen anywhere, right? Just follow your gut, try to go with someone who has been there before or is from there and just avoid the obvious (people who look shady -I know this is a bit vague, but believe me, you will know), places that look shady, etc.

I am from Rio and have lived in the US for the last 10 years but go back every year for x-mas and new years.

If you have some flexibility, DEFINITELY try to spend New Year's at Copacabana beach. Believe me, it is all that you hear and more. I am a native (lived most my life 15 minutes away from Copa) and never gotten tired of it. Even if you're more on the mellow side, you can still go and enjoy what (at least used to be) the largest display of fire-works in the world. It really is mind blowing to be on the sand with another 1,.5-2 million people (all dressed in white- tradition to welcome the new year with peace) watching that. Sometimes they'll even throw in (most years) some really cool free concert.

If you're not thinking of Rio, I don't have much info for you. Unfortunately I traveled very little when used to live there. However, imagine the diversity of people, places, foods, etc here in the US and double that. The Amazon, Sao Paulo, Rio, Bahia are just a few examples of places so unique and so amazing in their own ways.

One last note, and this is just my opinion being a woman...if you're a woman and you're planning on going alone, I would definitely change your plans. Better safe than sorry, right?

Enjoy your trip and hope this helped!

I would LOVE to visit Brazil. In fact, it is one of the places I am debating going to this year. I did hear there was a very high crime rate, so I don't know...

Brazil must be a lovely country filled with beautiful women? I'm guessing that because I think Princess Sienna is from there! Anyway, I'd be lost there because I can't speak the language.

I like the freedom to wear nothing on the beach! The warm sun, beautiful beaches! I'd love to visit...but I'd never want to leave! I live in cold Wisconsin!
