Before you answer, read these details. I say everyone is an athlete if they want to be, but the true athletes that excell in their field are born. The athletes with the most skill and knowledge are born athletes.

It's usually the born athletes who exel in their field of sports. It's all in the genes. We all inherit the traits of our ancestors. such that black people tend toexelin many sportslike basketball, many Chinese tend to excel in math, many white people excel in combat, Filipinos exceling in boxing. Its the characteristics passedon tous by our ancestors. But even with allof that in our blood, like in most skills, lots of study, learning and practice is the ultimate key tosucceedin any field.lots of hard workand perceverance willtake us toour ultimate goals. Thosewhodont have itin their bloodtend to excel due to their undying effort to win.

Both. Many people are born without natural ability. Take these two examples:

Nolan Ryan: His fantastic speed and dominance was a direct result of genetics. If he had been born to different parents, he could have been a four-year jv starter in high school that never went beyond that.

Greg Maddux: He was built. He practiced and practised in HS, actually it said in a scouting report in high school on him that he didn't throw hard enough to ever play pro ball. But he developed pinpoint control and became a dominating force. He was built.

Hope this helped!

You can train, practice and and study a sport all you like but, at the end of the day, you are only maximizing what god gave you.

A suped up Kia might run like a BMW, but it will never be a Ferrari. That is the gap between a commited, disciplined recreational athlete and an outstanding professional.

By the same token, god given talent only goes so far without the work and dedication needed to achieve success at the highest levels.

How many stories can recall of wasted potential? For someone like me who did as much as he could with the little gift he was bestowed, that waste is the hardest thing to see.

I MEAN TO SAY THEY ARE BORN not built. i originally said they were built but i mean born..... FIELD VISION can't be taught youre born with that. take peyton manning for example (we'll use him cus he just won a title and no i am 49er fan not a colts fan) manning was born with all the skills because of genes. however, he was taught everything else EXCEPT FIELD VISION. now you say..how so? well look at his brother. eli LACKS that vision-he has all the ability but that's something he just can't get down. manning has been a success from day one for one reason and one only-his ability to see the field better than anyone else.

its something jordan had-emmit smith had,joe montana had and so on.

Agreed. Look at hockey, for example:

Sidney Crosby -- dad played
Colby Armstrong -- brother plays
Dominic Moore -- brothers play
Jarkko Ruutu -- brother plays
Eric Staal -- brothers play
Mario Lemieux -- brother, nephew plays

I wish I could find it (unforunately, I can't) but Sports Illustrated rated the top high school athletes in the nation and a majority of them had parents who played professional sports.

You can't deny the genetic connections.

They are just born that way. I used to be very good at cross country running, always coming first at sports day. I didn't find it that hard and I didn't train for it. But now I have asthma and I am the most unfit person I know dammit!

I absolutely agree with you. I think true athletes have the drive to succeed in what ever they want.

Anyone can bust their butt and become decent at a sport, but only those with natural talent can truly excel.
