Rules of engagement.
When the towers were toppled by terrorists, the only reciprocal response would have been to bomb Mecca flat to the ground.
That would have communicated that there are no muslim sacred cows that we won't sacrifice when we're properly pissed off.
Dinking around for months on end following 9/11and then slapping around a tyrant that half the Islamic world doesn't like anyway communicated the message that we're too afraid to offend sensitive muslim sensibilities. In other words, we're too wussy to hit them back hard.
Right now our rules of engagement SHOULD be unconditional. We should cut our guys loose to do what it takes to get the job done.
The problem is not that our guys can't win over there, or that they don't have the equipment, or the personnel. The problem is the same as in Vietnam, the war is being micromanaged by petty little rules set up by desk jockeys who would rather ban guns than let our guys shoot at the enemy.

We won the war, but now we are loosing the peace because the politicians in this country are more concerned about their re-election than the security and well being of this country. The United Nations is more Corrupt than the Mob that runs Russia. IF we pull out before the job is done we will ensure car bomings and more buildings comming down in this country at the hands of the enemy who is training in our country as we set here infront of our computers.

4 years?
The people of the middle east have been fighting amongst themselves for 4 thousand years.
I'm sure we'll give up and pull out by 2016, 2020 at the latest.
Keep a carfull eye on Halliburton's stock price for more details.

Not enough people over there, and no tradition of good government on which to build. Note particularly the contrast with the occupation of Japan in 1945, where there was an effective government in being which MacArthur used to good effect to prosecute his agenda.
