The question as you have phrased it is virtually impossible to answer accurately.....The money spent would easily be in the hundreds of millions, perhaps even close to a billion dollars overall.

You have to consider not only the Presidential elections (& primaries) but the gubernatorial races, senate, house of reps, state congressional races, local races for county & city positions.
