Because you aren't experiencing massive blood loss. Average blood loss is 35mL during the entire menstruation. It just seems like a lot more when - especially when using pads/tampons.

u lose about 2 tablespoons over the whole period. thats not alot at all. if a period caused massive blood loss, women would have died out thousands of years ago.

the stuff that comes out isn't actually blood (a small percentage of it is) -- it's the lining that builds up in our uterus that the fertilized egg is supposed to attach to if we become pregnant.
