I don't know if this one would be considered unique, but have you seen that Valentino dress Julia Roberts wore for the 2001 Oscars when she won the best lead actress award for "Erin Brockovich". I think that gown is so gorgeous and it looks good on everyone -- tall , short, slim, not slim, any girl! Take the advice from the gay guy here :-)

Most Unique Prom Dresses

It always depends on your budget and personal style--what about a vintage-style prom dress? Or you could get an authentic vintage prom dress. 50's dresses have a glamorous style that will pop out in a crowd; 60's dresses have a more mod style; 70's dresses are typically long, with a sleek outline--a lot of empire waists and spaghetti straps. There are a lot of sites online that sell authentic vintage dresses--just type "buy vintage dresses" on a search engine, and you'll find a bunch of sites. Be sure to go by dress measurements rather than sizes because sizes change over the decades.

If you see a dress that you like that's vintage but would rather have a new one made just for you, take a photo/picture of it to a good seamstress, and they'll be able to make it for you. Be sure you choose a good seamstress: ask to see dresses she's made in the past, and if possible get referrals from acquaintances. Be sure to find a seamstress well in advance, too, because during prom season they're schedules are really full, and you want to make sure you get your dress finished in time.

Have fun!!

If you didn't want vintage, then you should have SAID so before completely going off on people! No one knew you didn't like that. And when you said unique, you didn't say not TOO unique.. So don't go off on the people who suggested duck tape. I don't know the Chicago area so I don't know where you could get a dress made there, but for already made dresses on the internet, you could try david's prom, deb, group usa, etc. Good luck finding a dress.

You could also buy a dress from a Goodwill Store or a Salvation Army; it saves money. Just remember: prom is only one minor aspect of life, so don't take it too seriously. Either way, you will never have the most memorable dress. Prom is just a place where girls spend as much money on makeup, clothes, and limos as possible. It is all about the superficial aspects. Thus, don't get so worked up with prom, which is only a small part in your relatively meaningless high school existence.

I just went through the same thing for Homecoming. I live on the westside of Jacksonville, and right now dark colors are really in. If you are short or of average height, get a short dress that stops around the knees. Not to tight, but not to loose. Let the dress be sassy and have your hair in a sassy hanging style, that way you don't need to much jewelry. If you are taller were a long dress the same fitting, and your hair up with very cute yet simple jewelry.

Davids prom dresses has 17 pages. These are
ready made and probably much less expensive than paying a designer to make a pattern for one.

You might not be into this (most people aren't :) But some folks make duct tape dresses for prom. It's really a creative thing to do, and you'll remember it forever. You can either model a dress after one you have (thrift stores have cheap ones that have been stained often) or you can use a pattern from the sewing store.

I know there's tons of websites and magazines, like Seventeen Prom, to help you get started. I found a cool dress on edressme.com. It was BCBG Max Azria, and it was a long flowy pale tie-dyed dress. To get something unique, you'll probably have to spend alot of money for it or shop vintage. There should be vintage shops in Chicago. And there's plenty of vintage sites- I like hookedonvintage.com and poshgirlvintage.com.

Check out Loralie Fashions on the web @ Loralie.com. They have really pretty dresses there. Or try my personal favorite Stop Staring! website. I have to warn you that the clothes are really pricey but it is WELL worth it. They have the best dresses I've ever seen and they are definitely unique. They are beautiful one of a kind dresses and I highly recommend them. Have fun at your prom by the way! I only wish I knew of Stop Staring! six years ago when I went to my prom.
