They have had to change with the times, I liked Sarah Jane, but I think Rose is Great. However Rose would not have been suited to Sarah Jane's time.

All of the Doctor's companions were wonderful in their own way... I HATED the 5th Doctor's companions, other than Peri, but she is more of a 6th Doctor companion. But that is beside the point...
Ace will always hold a place in my heart as my favorite. I was a young teenager when I first saw the 7th Doctor's adventures and I felt like I could relate to her. She was tough on the outside but scared just like all of us can be. She went through major character development, which was unheard of at the time on 'Doctor Who'. And she was NOT a twist-her-ankle-running-from-the-baddie type of companion!
But let's not forget the novel companions... Sam, Roz, Chris, Benny, etc. Bernice (Benny) Summerfield was the only other companion who did what we thought only Sarah Jane could do, carry a spin-off on her own.

Oooh, Sarah Jane I reckon. Though a lot of the time she acted like a bit of a div, when they got a decent script writer on the case, she was entertaining.

Adric.
Rose Tyler is still the sexiest.
How come Sarah Jane actually looked younger and sexier when she returned last season ?

Rose was the best.
I was a kid when Sarah Jane was the companion. I thought she was good, but she screamed too much!!!
Maybe women where supposed to scream at the slightest hint of danger back in the 70's!!!

Rose - by a country mile. She was the most believable, bravest & thoughtful of the lot.She would have done anything to save the Doctor i reckon.Squaring up to Daleks, facing Cybermen & standing up to werewolves - you name it.
Rose gets my vote for the way she left the series as well.It was so sad & heart breaking.I'm not ashamed to admit i cried buckets at that!!
