i personally thought they needed and they were going to trade alex but time went by and they just decided to keep him. iwould have gotten young players like miguel cabrebra and dontrelle willis but cashman is to stupid to get some of those young players and get a veterans like pettite and clemens who have just about nothing left.

First off, Cashman is definitely not stupid, his only big mistakes has been signing a few players in the past for big money that didn't pan out in NY ( ex. Randy Johnson and Kevin Brown). You can't even blame him for Pavano because he was the best option on the market that year and had a good upside no one would have known Pavano would go through all that nonsense. I'm not a fan of A-Rod's fielding at third base but he is still one of the best players in the game and he is in the "prime" of his career ( a little younger than Jeter). A-Rod has a no-trade clause and would have to okay any team that he would move to. Do you really think that he would be willing to go to the Marlins? If the Yankees just traded A-Rod to another team they would have to cough up another productive third baseman and at least one elite ace. The only trade Cashman would consider is if a healthy Francisco Lirano and Johan Santana were being offered and even then Alex would never agree to playing for the Twins. Let's just say they did move A-Rod, why would the Marlins look to lose both Willis and Cabrera? Willis has been the only one on the trading block in the first place and had a pretty rough season especially in a weak National League. NY looked into him but they were asking for too much. Cabrera is their best player the Marlins would be asking for a lot in return and Cashman is looking to keep prospects not give them away. More than likely the Marlins would be asking for Philip Hughes who will end up being one of the best pitchers in the league. Plus, if the Yanks really want Cabrera they could get him later; Cabrera's contract will be up next season. The Yankees could keep A-Rod and if he opts out of his contract for more money the Yankees could make a run at Cabrera then. Both Clemens and Pettitte were free agents and would only cost them money, something they freed up this offseason after dumping Johnson, the Yankees wouldn't have to lose anything. Pettitte is only 34 and showed that he could win in NY, not to mention the contract is only for a year with a player option for a second (not a big risk). Pettitte would never have left if it hadn't been for miscommunication during the negotiations. Last season he had a rough first half after surgery but after the All Star Break he posted an ERA just over 2 (something like 4th best in the league) and would've had a better record if he had run support, something that the Astros did not have last season. Clemens I could understand having concerns about but that has nothing to do with A-Rod; the possible addition of Clemens would not cost the Yankees any players and he will likely be okay for only part of a season. In all likelyhood he will be one of the best choices of starting pitchers in the middle of the season, any team would want him as part of their staff down the stretch. Neither Pettitte or Clemens are Johan Santana (free after 2008) but both of them have plenty left to help a team win next season; you'd just have to look at the stats to realize it.

No, A-Rod is one of the best players in the game. He contributes significantly to the Yankees lineup, and is a much better choice than any other 3B in the AL. The Yankees lose if A-Rod leaves them for a team who can actually respect his abilities (although, they probably couldn't afford him).
Willis and Cabrera can only be had by trade-- if they were free agents like Petitte and Clemens, then yes, Cashman could have signed them to big deals. However, the Marlins are asking for the moon in trades for these young, inexpensive players. The Yankees, other than Hughes, don't really have the farm system to put together an attractive trade for a cost cutting team like Florida.

I don't have a problem with him leaving. Look at his track record. No matter how good he is, his teams don't win. I think there is a connection to be found somewhere. You could be right about the others however. At the moment there is nothing very attractive about being a Yankee. I still can't believe how they threw Torre under the bus. I'm a Yankee fan but at the present I feel pretty empty about the future. With A-Rod it's always about the money. Guys like him will never win a ring. The money is more important to him than the ring. I personally think A-Rod couldn't handle the pressure of New York. He's not committed to winning, he is committed to money!

Alex was born in NY, and has always wanted to play there. He wants to win, so what Alex wants is probably what he is going to get unless he cannot perform up to expectations.

It might be nice to trade Alex to Florida for the players you mentioned, but Florida does not have the cash to pay Alex the salary he is under contract for, and I doubt Texas (who still pay for a portion of his contract) and the Yankees are willing to continue paying for him to play somewhere else.

What is a more likely scenario is for Alex to renegotiate his current contract for less money or void it and go somewhere else and the Yankees will be without him and a World Series title.

It is the fans of NY who call for his ouster (mostly due to his underperforming in the post season), not Alex. A lot of people would consider 35 HRs, a .300+ batting average and 120+ rbis a career year - for Alex, he is just not living up to his potential. What the Yankees fail to realize is that with bombers like Godzilla, Giambi, Jeter and Abreu there's very little pitching left for Alex to hit - pitchers tend to pitch around him.

Come on, he had ONE bad season, so what? He's still a great player. If you want to get rid of a good defense player, and 30+ Home-Runs + a hopeful at breaking Hank Arrons (which will probably Barry Bonds) HR record, then fine, send him off to the Twins, we'll be happy to take him.

I think this will be his last shot with the Yankees. He needs to come through in key situations and when the Yankees make the playoffs he better come through there as well. For 25.2 million dollars a year he needs to produce, not make excuses.

If he would quit thinking about what other people think of him and just be a baseball player...he would thrive no matter were he played. A-rod is a perfect example that playing sports is 90% mental ability
