Neither would be my preference. I would put quotation marks around the sentence to be corrected in either case. The case with the colon needs a question mark somewhere, since it is a question.

i disagree with many of the answers. first, 'this' refers to the object which is just mentioned. In this case, your sentence would end with the question mark. 'how would you correct this sentence?' doesnt make much sense does it, bcoz ur not incorporating the other part of the whole statement. There fore, a colon would be better as it makes 'this' refer to 'i gone to the mall.' without the colon, it seems you are just making two completely irrelevant statements.

I think most people missed your point. "How would you correct this sentence?" This is a question so it should have a question mark. The second sentence is obviously the one you want corrected by the student.

A colon joins two independant clauses, which is not what you are trying to do.

I assume you would mean either:

I am at the mall.

or:

I went to the mall.

Or:

I have been to the mall.

The second is more correct than the first as you use a question mark, so it is correct.
