I have to have an electromyography and nerve conduction studies done on my legs. Someone tell me what to expect, as far as pain is concerned.

I wouldn't be too worried about the nerve conduction study. At the very most, you may feel like you've been snapped by a rubber band, but this won't be constant. However, during electromyography, small needles are placed into particular muscles, so you may feel a little more discomfort while they are placing the electrodes (which are connected to the needles), but they are not put in very deep and they are not large.

I just had those done a few months ago. I have autonomic neuropathy. Everyone is different when it comes to pain, so no matter what anyone says, bad or good, your level of pain could be different. The tests were more annoying than painful to me - well, like someone poking you in certain spots until it hurt and you couldn't tell them to stop. As long as you relax and know that each "poking" session will only last from a few seconds to about a minute, you will be fine. The worst pain felt kind of like being snapped with a rubber band, but that was the very worst and that didn't last at all. Just remember, it is all worth it if the tests can find whatever is going on with your body. Think happy thoughts and before you know it you'll be going home!

Depending on the doctor performing the test, they can be painful. The NCS portion of the test consists of the dr delivering a series of electrical stimulations to the nerves in the feet and legs, this tells them if the nerve impulses are travelling appropriately. Not really painful, just a little uncomfortable. The EMG is different...the dr will insert very small needle (not hollow like injection needle, so very small) into the muscle of the legs and feet..he/she will then have you flex that muscle...this tells the dr if there is any nerve root damage... Not a bad test, very informative.

EMG TESTS CAN BE A LITTLE UNFORTABLE WHEN THE THIN NEEDLES ARE INSERTED INTO THE SKIN, BUT THERE ARE NO SIDE EFFECTS AT ALL. I'VE HAD ONE AND NEXT DAY WAS AS IF NOTHING HAPPENED.
