you have to simplify your question if your asking about slavery in general that you're talking about slavery beginning in ancient times. Now if if your talking about the slavery of African-Americans, that began shortly after the settlers came from Europe and began killing all the Indians(who were forced to be slaves on their own land) and needed to get more slaves. And so they took after the portuguese around the beginning of the 1600's and went to africa to kidnap people. so estiated slavery last for almost 300 years. The underground railroad were freed slaves and other people who were willing to risk their lives to help free the slaves in the 1800's. It was an "underground railroad" but rather private homes, property, and secret passages that were unknown to the american government.
