Check with the local tax assessor. They would have records of who has been paying taxes on it for all those years. If you have been openly using it for over 20 years you might be able to claim it by adverse possession ("squatters' rights") unless the town itself took it as public property after non-payment of taxes. If it looks like you could get it hire a lawyer at that point to make it legal.

A title search or a check of the court house records for the owner of the address, should give you the answers.

Rarely can you just take land. Most all of it belongs to someone.

Check with the local taxing body...there should be plat maps for all land in any settled area, and it's the taxing body's job to keep the records straight...they should be able to let you know...

if its not owned by a specific person, then it belongs to the local government. You can't just take a piece of land.

Contact your local court and find out whose name the land is in. Then contact that person or company and ask if you can purchase it legally.

Check with the county clerks office. They can tell you who owns it.
