how does an american phone number show on your mobile?

apart from one call, I have had about 10 missed calls in 3 days but the number is unknown. The one number that came up was an 020 7 number which rediverted to the states when I called it back. Is it possible that the other missed calls are from the states also?

umm numbers in the us look like dis 1-877-000-0000 jus different numbers
