John Entwistle! He practically invented the idea that a bassist could play more than 3 notes. If you listen to some the Who live stuff, he has some incredible bass solos. Such a shame he died, his presence would have made this last Who album that much better...

Touch call as I'm a bass player and have lots of folks whose playing I admire. If pressed, I'd have to go with John Entwhistle of The Who.

I'd have to second Les Claypool, although Geddie Lee is awesome as well, and probably my favorite bass player.
