I think social up bring plays a part in this.
Think how long this was a soceity that the men go out and work and the woman stays home. The society pushed ideals like that onto people for a long long time and it hasn't gone away 100%
I also think that some people tend to think that people not like them are not as good for some reason. Sometimes it might be gender, sometimes race, sometimes something else.
" Is it even worth trying to change?"
I would say yes, at least on the level that you show them that you are just as smart as your classmates.
But I understand if it gets tiring since I had to deal with similar issue when I was in school (expect I had to deal with people thinking I was as smart as them because of my race and not my gender)

Men look down on women simply because of religion, culture and more.
Men are genetically built to be bigger and stronger than women. Most women are smaller and slimmer than males anyways. Look at animals for instance. The male is usually proud and tall, aye? 'Course there's always the exception.
If you're religious, possibly... Then
Men are to provide, to take care of women. Women are to clean and take care of men.
And depending on how you would perceive a man looking down on a woman.. perhaps you have a different way of 'perceiving' things.. Personally with me being a woman and all men don't look down at me and I don't look up at them. It's usually the other way around. But you'll find throughout life you may need help from someone of a different gender.
And because almost men AND women are at each others throats about who's better than who, well, you'll have men looking down on women and women looking down on men. It's human nature. It'll always be a conflict.

I want to disagree with you because I do not look down on women at all and neither do many of my male friends. Actually I look at them as complete equals. Almost all of my best friends are women, and one actually holds and important role in my town and is respected by many. In my high school we have multiple programs attempting to encourage girls to take on roles in the IT and other technological industries to show that what men can do women can do just as well. I am proud to be a part of the committee that helps with this and I think it is really great.
But when it does come down to it many men do look upon women as unable to handle the tasks they themselves do. However, we are seeing in our younger generations, an increase in the acceptance of women as equals and it is great. Now I speak coming from the North East Cost (New York Area) and I realize that in many other parts of the country it is quite different, but some of the programs I have come to learn about, for young women, are forming into nation wide campaigns.
Of course it is worth it to try to change, many are out there trying to change things as we speak. Without change there can be no progress. We must all work together to make our world, and our country, a better place to live.

These are some of the reasons men look down on women:
Please be aware I am generalising and in no way intend to
offend anyone:
1. Germaine Greer said there are places men don't want women to follow them. Yet we women insist on doing just that.
2. Women (mostly) operate from their feelings and intuition. Men from their knowledge and experience.
3. To men's ear, some women's voices contain an irritating
timbre, very difficult to tolerate.
4. In many male opinion, it is better to be a dick head than an air head, which in their view many women are.
In other words it is perceived that most women are still not as smart as most men and here is the crux.

They look down on women because men think that a woman can not do their job. Men also think that they are better than women. Men want to think that they are more intelligent, but they feel threatened when a woman takes their job or is smarter.

This answer is so complex....The woman who shot Andy Warhol was named Valerie Solanos. She was a hard core lesbian and man hater, which I am neither..but she wrote a document called the SCUM manifesto...basically explaining your answer in a very harsh way...You should google it by her name or the name of the document..It will give you an interesting perspective on at least how we can feel about this (women should feel about men's resentments for us) Don't take it to seriously, this lady seemed a bit off....Just give it a look if you get a chance...It's been so long I am gonna look it up right now....

This doesn't apply to all men, but many of them try to make up for in ego for what they lack in penis size.
