At one point in time a lot of people wore wigs-young, old, men, women. It was a sign of status. People cut their hair short and put on the wigs, often also powdering them (use of wigs was probably meant to decrease the amount of lice, bedbugs, diseases[or so they thought] etc. At a certain point in their lives, people would start wearing white wigs. It is certainly a sign of age, and therefore would seem to be a sign of knowledge and esteem as well. Judges still do.
