Underactive thyroid (aka hypothyroidism) is where the thyroid don't supply enough hormones to regulate metabolism. Hypothyroidism can cause obesity, since the thyroid isn't able to regulate metabolism.

Overactive thyroid (aka hyperthyroidism) is just the opposite of hypothyroidism in that the thyroid produces too much of the metabolism-regulating hormone.

Underactive thyroid is called Hypothyroidism. It means the thyroid does not produce enough hormone and needs replacement hormones in the form of a medication. The medication can be lab created or natural. Symptoms are; weight gain, difficulty losing weight with diet & exercise, IBS with constipation, low body temp, cold feet & hands, slow heart rate, low blood presure, depression, dry skin, dry thinning hair, sleep apnea, headaches, sensitivity to light, and muscle and joint aches.

Overactive thyroid is called hyperthyroidism. It results when the thyroid gland produces too much hormone. Symptoms are fast heart rate, sweaty, weight loss, diarehea, nervousnes, anxiety, feeling hot, and headaches. Treatment can be a medication or killing off the thyroid gland making the person hypothyroid.

The thyroid produces hormones that regulate the body's metabolism. So if you suffered from hyperthyroidism, a main symptom would be dramatic weight loss.

Underactive = Hypothyroidism
Main symptom would be weight gain
