I think its foolish to think that MP3s have ZERO relationship to the decline in sales. Clearly free music is better than paying for it; but the fact the product itself is north worth the money is also worth taking a look at. CDs just cost too much money, if the music companies started to sign good bands and sold CDs at decent prices along with some more content (bundled DVD of a live show or somthing) more people might be willing to pay for it.

There are several factors influencing this change. Folks are less likely to purchase a entire CD for one song. One can purchase the desired song over the Internet. That being said, the illegal sharing of copyrighted material has had an adverse impact on CD sales. While I have sympathy for new lower income artists, it is hard to shed tears over multi-millionaire artists that have released multiple versions of "re-mastered" songs and produced low grade music to fill up a CD.

Quite honestly, i think that it is a little of both. Millions of people download music illegally each day, giving them no reason to go spend money on the CD. And Artists are running out of ideas, sounding more and more like the same old thing.

So i think its both.
