Even though you're on good terms, is it really any of your employer's business where you're headed? I would just give them a written and verbal two week notice. Be sure to say something complimentary, like how much you've enjoyed working with them and what a valuable experience it's been. It's up to you and how comfortable you are, but even under the best of circumstances it's really not any of their business.

sure why not. If things don't work out for you, and if your employer whom you are leaving does not find a suitable replacement, you might be called back with an offer for higher pay.

It happened to me once.

Put in your 2 weeks notice and ask to talk to your supervisor and explain what you are doing.
