It's a huge descision, but we feel it's the right one. Just wondering if anyone has been through it and how painful and long the recovery period is, as I have a 7mth old and a 2 year old to care for.
Does it effect you hormonally? My desire to have more children is still quite strong although I have no intentions of doing so...spoken to GP and just waiting for a referal.

Hubby can't have the snip, he's had 2 major op's in the last 2 years, this was discussed with doc.

Sterilization is done using 'keyhole' surgery. It requires a general anaesthetic, but is done as a day-case as long as you are otherwise well.

After being anaestheized, the person's abdomen is inflated with CO2 gas and special intruments are used to locate the fallopian tubes, each of these is clipped, so that eggs can no longer leave the ovaries to travel towards the womb to be fertilized. There is no effect on the ovaries or the hormones. You will continue to get periods.

The postop recovery does take a day or so. Most units would supply you with detailed information on the 'do's' and 'don'ts'. Some people find it quite painful. Pain varies a lot from person to person. Some need a small dose of morphine painkiller after waking up. Surgeons often also put local anaesthetic into the small cuts that they need to make. It's also possible for you to have a suppository painkiller whilst asleep to help with pain relief when you wake up. Surprisingly, some people get shoulder-tip pain, due to the CO2 irritating the undersurface of the diaphragm. You would be supplied with painkillers to take home too.

After having this done you have a good excuse to get your husband to do the cooking and look after the children for at least 24 hours!

Hopefully this info will help you make your decision.

I have been sterilised, recovery time is only a couple of days before you can do normal chores.., I'm one that hates to be sitting down for long, i think that the quicker you start doing things the better you will feel, just don't do anything too strenuous though until the doctor recommends..,,,
Normally you end up with a cm incision in the belly button and one just on the bikini line, i think the worst that could happen is that you suffer with trapped wind, this can sometimes occurs around your shoulders, but it don't last for long...

It didn't make any difference to my hormonal balance either..

I have no regrets, my periods were a little up and down at first but that could have been down to my poly-cystic Ovaries..

Overall if your partner won't get done and your certain you don't want anymore children , then i would go for it, i was adamant that i didn't want more, and 10 yrs later i still feel the same...
I suppose it could be an even easier process now too, with technology changing all the time!

Good luck and best wishes!!...

Hi there....I was sterilised in May Last year after 5 children. I'm on my own & the youngest was at the time almost 2. It was a real simple op... honestly !!! In & out in 1 day!! It did hurt as I came round in the recovery room but only like bad period pains & that was gone by the morning. My periods have been fine since, no real changes so hormonaly it's ok! Infact it's like a big weight gone off my shoulders...I too still had the desire to have more children with ABSOLUTLY no intention of having more & I am fine! I guess we should just think .... mmmmm a new baby... nice & sweet ....BUT THEY GROW UP!!!! My friends have had babies since & boy it's good to hand them back!!!!!! good luck .... go for it ! ( & milk the after pains to get hubby to do the housework! ) xx

Hiya,
I was sterilised 18 months ago (at the age of 31). It's a quick procedure and your out in the same day although you won't want to do much for a couple of days. I have never regretted it. I have 3 lovely children and not worrying about getting pregnant has actually made it better between my husband and myself (if you know what i mean ; - ) !!). Hope this helps xxx

Send your hubby, he can stop using his Doctor for the excuse. YOU squeezed 4 rugrats thru your hoochie and now it is his turn. I had one and it was the best decision I ever made.
The best part about the vasectomy is it can ALLWAYS be verified! Female sterilization isn't verified until number 5 shows up and it is too late.

it would be wiser to have your husband 'done'
