So, if you mail a package/letter in the afternoon, it won't go anywhere until the morning? Is it the same for when it's not being delivered yet, but going from branch to branch? Or do they leave at different times?

In larger cities, FedEx and DHL both have a "deliver by noon" and "deliver by 3pm", but they still only go by scheduled delivery stops once a day.

As far as the trucks: they depart throughout the day--larger locations as soon as the truck is full. The flights have a scheduled times of departure but it is far more than once a day. But if you meant as far as at the huge FedEx distribution, they leave at different times depending on how far it has to go to get to the city. A NYC to Chicago truck leaves a lot sooner than the NYC to Phillie truck.

But they are still working and traveling the whole time. If you mail your letter in the afternoon, it will spend the entire night in transport. I have even seen USPS trucks on the road on multiple trips late into the night. Flights usually leave somewhere around 11pm. If you are mailing it to a rural town, it will probably do the branch to brach leg (to the closest large city) that night. Then the next morning (early) the small leg. For example in Ohio--it would probably make it to Akron Ohio that night. But the following morning it would have to make it to the much smaller Warren. The individual carrier will be able to pick it up and take it to the address when he starts his route around 7am.

It's easier to have a static schedule versus a dynamic schedule.

So although they may have multiple trips scheduled from past experience they are fairly rigid in their times. It also makes it more predictable when a item will arrive.
