It is helpful to have at least two or three wallets. One for the small change to buy a drink or a snack at a street vendor (about 20 EUR max) one with a "shopping reserve" for slightly more expensive purchases (about 50 EUR) and the rest in your money belt.

Keep your credit card, your travellers cheques and your cash seperate, so that if one of these stashes gets stolen, you still have the other.

If at all possible, keep an emergency reserve at the hotel/hostel securily locked away under the guard of your dirty underwear and smelly socks. (If you go with your boyfriend, have him **** into one of his pants and use this one. A thief would have to very determined to riffle through this.)

Italy is known for pickpockets. Have a money belt around your waist over which your pants go on. Keep money in your front pouch. Do not travel by crowded trains or buses or keep very close to someone near fairs or market places. If it can be avoided keep minimal amount and carry the rest by travellers cheques. You can encash with reputable banks when required.

Good question .... pick pockets and thieves abound in Italy.

-Daytime ..... a money belt and a couple of other locations on your clothing. ie split it up.
-Night time - stay at a reputable hotel booked on a reputable web based booking service with a customer help deck to liase in English for you - cheaperthanhotels are great. Use the hotel safe and make sure you have a receipt for your deposit.
Use credit cards and carry very little cash

Carry a money belt, one that goes under your shirt, or around your waist and tuck it under your pants. I had one of those, and that was very helpful. Not the most fashionable, but I rather have my money than be fashionable and get money stolen from me.
Another place is to put it in your shoe. I ended up doing that when I was in Rome. Not all my money but the money I wasnt going to be spending anytime soon. Never leave money in a wallet in your back pocket. Always have it near your body at all times. If you are going to put money in your pocket, but it in the front pocket. Always if you have a purse, keep the zipper closest to your body, and in front of you. If you have a bag, you can lock up your bag with zip ties or with a lock. I had a lock on all my bags when I went traveling last Fall.
Good luck!!!
