You know who I mean and if you do not you are most likely a delusional Yankee fan.

I see that there are alot of crack smokers here. No one in the history of baseball can compete with Arods offensive numbers combined with his defensive prowess. Get a clue people.

Hopefully somehow Walt can lure him to Stl to play with Albert. Eckstein's contract is up at the end of the season if Arod opts out.

And to answer your question. He has a 50/50 shot. Just depends if he opts out or not.

Well, you left it open (intentionally, I think) by not mentioning names. How do you quantify it? Best offensive shortstop? Defensive shortstop? Or a combination of the two?

A-Rod's move to third, and the fact that he hasn't played shortstop regularly in two years, hurts his chances. As long as he's on the Yankees, he won't play shortstop.

And he may not be able to switch back, now that he's moved to third. I'd say he's there for the duration of his career.

I'll agree with most of what's been said, though- calling him the 'greatest shortstop ever' is a little premature, especially since he switched positions relatively early in his career. Ripken didn't until his last couple of years.

The best shortstop? Do you mean Honus Wagner? The man is DEAD, show him some respect for Pete's sake! No he won't be back, I assure you. Not unless Field of Dreams 2 comes out, at the very least. Barring that, if you meant more recently- I also agree that Ripken won't be back at SS either.

But, clearly you mean A-Rod. For some ridiculous reason. Don't get me wrong, he is a force at the plate and on the basepaths- but no one ever mistook him for Ripken out on the field, I'll tell you that. He's playing an easier position now at 3B and he's still making easy plays look hard now and again. And to be quite honest? I don't think he will. By the time his contact is up, he'll be well adjusted to 3B and considerably older. I don't think a team would trust him to be able to adjust to moving back to his old position.

He's not the best SS in history. He wasn't Ozzie with the glove, definately has a much better bat. He's got nothin on Cal, though. Maybe if he could have stayed at SS he could have become the best in history. To answer your question, yes he will. He'll get out of NYC and go somewhere that will get him off the hot corner, because he just can't handle it.

Honus Wagner or Ozzie Smith.

That's a pretty bold statement considering that A-Rod's career is so young when compared to the all time greats. I don't think you can compare him to Cal, Ozzie, Ernie and others at this time. Let's wait and see how the rest of his career plays out. The only fair comparisons now are to his peers - Derek and others. Derek is definitely as good as A-Rod without some of the baggage.

I'm not delusional and I'm not a Yankees fan.

The best SS ever was Honus Wagner. You're some 90 YEARS out of whack here.

I am sorry to tell you, but Ozzie Smith and Cal Ripken are the best SS's ever to play SS.

Cal Ripken won't because he's going to be in Cooperstown but Gay Rod will because he's a baby and the Yankees will let him go.

No. He is 72 yo. He lives in Venezuela. His name is Luis Aparicio. The second best ever is taking grounders getting ready for his 19th ML season - Omar Vizquel.
