The Battle of Waterloo (Dutch: ʋɑtər'lo:), fought on 18 June 1815, was Napoleon Bonaparte's last battle. His defeat led swiftly to his final overthrow as ruler of France. After his exile to Elba, he had reinstalled himself on the throne of France for a Hundred Days. During this time, the forces of the rest of the great Europe powers declared him an outlaw and hastily formed the Seventh Coalition to defeat him. Coalition forces which posed an immediate threat to Napoleon were close to France's north east frontier under the command of the United Kingdom's Duke of Wellington, and Prussia's Gebhard von Blücher. Napoleon chose to attack them before they crossed the frontier to attack him. The campaign's decisive battle was the Battle of Waterloo, however the outcome of the battle was in the balance until close to the end when allied forces under Wellington withstood a final French attack and counterattacked while the Prussians, arriving in force, broke through on Napoleon's right flank.
“ The nearest run thing you ever saw in your life — Wellington ”
The battlefield is in present day Belgium, about 12 km (7.5 miles) SSE of Brussels, and 2 km (1.2 miles) from the town of Waterloo, at 50°40′45″N, 4°24′25″E.
