Probably coz like me you dread its gonna be one of them door to door sales people who try to harrass you into buying something you don't want (like health insurance or changing your electric/phone supplier)
Oooooh these people get on my nerves!! I always tell them I'm not interested, but being polite with them is a waste of time, they have an answer for EVERY reason you give for declining.....and I've also noticed they ALWAYS give you a compliment when you first answer the door!! (I've had compliments such as "what a lovely top you're wearing" and "you never are 38!!!") I'm sure they are trained to comliment you as part of their sales pitch!!
This doorstep harrassment should be made illegal!
You can't get rid of them, they won't take a polite no and I always end up having to shut the door on them!! The phone ones are just as bad (altho I am now on the list to not have these harrassment calls and immediately tell them they are breaking the law and ask for their name and company....they soon hang up quick then!! haha)

Because your home is your sanctuary. There, you don't have to be on your guard, or put on a good public face. Anyone at the front door is a possible invader into your domain.

Because they're invading your space. Your home is supposed to be your sanctuary, and then there's somebody there trying to open up a door in it...it's a lot different.
In public, the expectation is that you mix and mingle. But at home, it's weird to have somebody show up and expect you to be all cordial and s**t.
I hate answering my front door, too. I want a moat...but I doubt that would fly in the hallway of an apartment building.
Maybe a drawbridge...

Well, I am the same way...I am in my lounge clothes...when I go out I look more decent and am not as likely to be in the mood for afternoon naps. I guess its the atmosphere..more going on in public...can't sleep on the bed display in that section of the mall..

Does it freak you out because you don't know who is going to be on the other side? When you're out in public you can see and kind of plan out who you are going to approach and how.

because in public these people aren't coming to your house and when they come to your door they are at your house. You might be afraid of them scanning your house for something that they might consider bad.
