The first man to propose an Underground railway in London was Charles Pearson, Solicitor to the City of London who gave evidence to a Royal Commission in 1846 for his Arcade Railway and Central Terminus Co. The Commission said it was 'ingenious' but nothing more. However, Pearson with the help of John Pearson, an architect for the City drew up plans for a 3 and three quarter mile line from Faringdon to Bishop's Road, Paddington. This was planned to link the three main line termini at Paddington, Euston and King's Cross, terminating at the City Cattle Market. An Act was applied for in 1853, and approval given then only for a line between Paddington and Edgware Road. Work started in 1860 with the formal opening in 1863. This eventually became the first part of the Metropolitan Railway. now the Metropolitan Line of LU. The first deep tube railway was the City and South London which opened in 1890
