my lower eye lid (whatever its called) liek really hurts. I think I can see a little red bump on the edge. It really hurts when I touch and whenever I blink. I have had styes before, but they neever felt this bad. I went to the nurse at school today and she said it was the beginning of a very bad stye. What does this mean? Will it get worse instead of better then?

It sounds just like a stye to me. I get these on and off, and have had since I was a child. Sometimes they are not too painful, other times they are agony!

I actually have the start of one at the moment, and it's been sore and "bruised" feeling for about 3 weeks now! No red lump yet though...

Styes are caused by a bacteria and they are similar to a zit, it's a blockage of the sebaceous gland. Generally they will just go away on their own.

The other thing it could be is a chalazion, which is similar to a stye for the first few days, but instead of turning in to a pimple it turns in to a hard lump and they tend to be further from the edge of the eyelid than a stye.

Unlike a zit though, a stye should never be squeezed, you should allow it to either rupture by itself or to disappear, as most of them do.

Other symptoms as well as pain and a lump can be watering of the eye, swelling or a feeling similar to light sensitivity.

If you are very worried then do see either your doctor or a pharmacist, but I don't think there is too much to worry about.

You can get ointments that help to heal a stye, which you may want to consider if it is particularly painful and you want rid of it sooner.
