And why is it that if you cut the fabric of the old hem to prevent a big ugly hem, the pants end up too short, even if you have measured 3 times? I am outraged, but does this happen to anyone else?

Its because life is unfair. Like they say, if it CAN go wrong, it will.

You're probably taking away too much fabric when you hem. Measure your inseam and add 1-2.5" to this measurement, depending on how long you want the hem to be. Mark with chalk on the pants where the hem is to stop, fold on this line you've marked with chalk and press it with an iron. The material that is left over will be your hem that is visible on the inside of the pants.

If you're doing a single fold hem (which may or may not need serging on the edge) then allow for 1" extra material for the hem. If you're doing a double fold hem (fold material over, then fold again) then allow for more than 1.5" of extra material for the hem. All you have left to do is stitch it.

If you're hemming pants that have never been washed before they're going to shrink up more. So wash your pants, and then see if they need to be taken up. I'm not sure what you mean by trying to prevent a big ugly hem..do you mean when the fabric frays on the bottom from wear if the pants are too long? You need to measure your inseam, on the pants and your legs and make sure everything is measuring out the same, otherwise you'll keep having this problem.

Yes, it happens frequently. I took to washing a brand-new pair of pants twice and drying them thoroughly before hemming them, and that took care of that problem. For "dry clean only", I always buy them with a hem an inch longer than I really want 'em, knowing they'll shrink somewhat even when dry-cleaned the first time. That's true of my wife's pants, too...

you should wash your pants 2-3 times before having them hemmed and you wouldn't have such a problem.

Heck, I'm still pondering why my chick wants to wear my boxers, much less hem adjusments.
