A computer program of application runs on your system and performs a task for the end user ie. you.
For example:

Installed Games are programs
Software on your pc such as Microsoft Office
All of the shortcuts on your desktop link to programs

Simply it is anything on your pc system that performs a task.

Top be honest it really is hard to explain without going onto google or a dictionary. I hope I helped though.

a program is a set of instructions that tells your computer how to perform a given function. for example, there is a program, or set of them, which, when you type on a key on your keyboard, the instructions are sent from the keyboard to the CPU, or, central processing unit, which recognizes the instructions in its language, and puts out what you type in the language in which you are typing.
