Fear of the dark is common in all age groups. It is simply the fear of not knowing what is going on around you, even the slightest noise makes you jump. Notice that when darkness is around, your hearing becomes more efficient, that is because your sense of sight is useless.

yes, the dark is unknown. sight is most people's most used sense and biggest ally- the dark stops your ability to see.

it is a bit of an unnessacary fear in some cases, but we are taught since children to know our surroundings and watch out for trouble. trouble includes walking it things, tripping over stuff, ect

the dark also takes away our control. that is very scary indeed

I'm not sure of how common it is, but it has to be one of the biggest fears there is simply because it involves a fear of the unknown. It also involves to a lesser extent, not being able to control what is going on around you.
