My sister's boyfriend beat her up a few weeks ago (and hit her friend that was at their house), and he was in jail until today when he went to court. They charged him with two assaults, drunk under age, violation of previous probation, and violation of a protective order (she got a protective order that night and he called her from jail).

They gave him time served for the 3 weeks he's been in jail, and let him go. Now she's scared (and I am too) that he will come find her. She is hiding. She won't go to work. She won't come to my house because she is afraid he will come here looking for her.

Does anyone have any advice?

What do we have to do to get people to stop hitting their spouses?

Why did he get off scott free for all those charges?

Does anyone know how I can find out more details about the court case he had today?

Thanks in advance for any info you can help with.

First see if the first order is still good, if not, get a new one. If he gets within a certain range he will be picked up again if he violates it. The judge should have warned him about getting anywhere near them. If he has any smarts he wont come near them as it will get him alot of jail time so chances are hes scared too and will stay away from her. Jails are full so the judge felt he had served enough time already, but he should have been placed on probation too. She cant live in totl fear of this guy or she will always be paranoid. She just has to call police if she sees him around the area.. There will probably never come a time when spousal abuse ends because there is no way to control couples and their reactions to certain situations. If you have a case number contact the dept of records and give them the case number and find out what you can. Tell her to live her life or he wins. Take a self defense course for obvious reasons and to rebuild her confidence again. Good luck

You and your sister need to go down to the court house and get a protective order. This will state that he can't be within a certain distance of you, your sister, either of your houses or her place of work. If he shows up even after you have gotten the restraining order call the police immediately and they will pick him up.

You can also specifiacally say on the protective order that he is not allowed to contact her in writing or by phone. If he does file another police report. There is no easy answer for this just keep reporting him until the police take it seriously.

Get another restraining order and have her stay close to her friends and carry a cell phone. Never be alone. Call the police for advice too. Take a self defense course at the local police department. Good luck. God bless.
