Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier is an AWESOME murder mystery. Hitchcock made a movie out of it. It's really eerie but it's an easy read, and the style of writing is really beautiful. It's not like a generic murder mystery story. Plus, it's a good book for females too.

For Horror, you can't go wrong with Stephen King novels.
For Mystery, I'd recommend novels about the "87th Precinct" by Ed McBain, of which there are many. See the below link for a list of those.

For 6th grade, the HARDY BOYS series provides some good detective stories. If you read well, you might try any of the Sherlock Holmes stories or even Agatha Christie's books. Good luck.

Well, I can certainly recommend Stephen King, especially the old stuff (The Stand, It etc).
Depends what you mean by mystery - for psychological and detective thrillers, I like Jonathan Kellerman.

Stephen King and Dean Koontz are my favorite horror authors, and I believe they both have bestsellers.
