I am asking this because in the son "Popular" from Wicked, which I tihnk takes place between the times of 1890-1928. A line from the song says "...You'll hang with the right cohorts, you'll be good at sports..." Please refer to this when you write your answer.

Yes! However, conditions were extremely sexist. For one thing, women were encouraged to play sports such as "walking" or "croquet." Women were not encouraged to play demanding sports like baseball. It was considered quite unladylike to sweat in public.

1900-1930 is a tough time period to gauge because it was sort of progressive, yet sort of not. Early 1900s was Teddy Roosevelt's prime and the push for "muscular Christianity," which was just another way of saying that men should be more masculine and try to take good care of their bodies. During this time organizations such as the YMCA (young men's christian association) used sports as their common ground. Women, however, were encouraged to establish their house-wife characteristics.

Women certainly had few organized leagues at this time. After the suffragettes got women's rights brewing in the 1930s, however, the climate began to change.

Good luck!
