And I have seven ear piercings and a nose ring lol! That should get the anti piercing mob angry, lol (sorry etc!)
Incidently my daughter aged 4 and a half does not want any earrings or such, not even clip on toy ones, she said that's for adults and so I will respect that (my parents got mepierced when I was four- ears, lol!).

lip piercing hardly hurts. if you can get a cavity filled at the dentist and stand the pain, this won't be too bad at all. it does hurt worse the next couple days though. just wash it out with what they tell you too, usually warm water and sea salt. the main thing is making sure it doesnt bump your teeth. and, it might aggitate your gums a bit.
i think that after a year you can take it out without anything different in it. after 6 weeks, though, you can get a clear retainer. hardly visible.
as far as social implications go, i personally think there is nothing wrong with it. facial piercings are getting more and more acceptable, and i think it helps keep peoples looks young and fun.
good luck!!

Go for it. Half the fun is finding out if it will work or not. Well I can't help you out with how painful it might be cause it all depends on your own pain threshold (I have had over 20 so can't say). You would not be able to take the piercing out for at least three months cause of the healing process. If you do decide on the piercing there are bars available with a flat bit that does on the inside of the lip that will not damage your teeth.
If you have questions there is a guy (Eddy Graham of Body Piercing & Jewellery Studio SA) that I go to that has been doing it for over 15 years & he will be able to answer all your questions

Lip Piercings are not as painful. You do need to find a good piercing studio because if you don't get it done correctly the ring may rub agent's your teeth and damage them. It does takes a while to heal. I had my lip Pierced for 2 years and I took it out for about 3 hours and it started to close. It was kind of hard to get it back in. I don't recommend taking it off for a long period of time.

I have always wanted my lip pierced and said that if there was a way to do it and be able to take it out for professional places such as work then I'd do it. Really, I don't think its practical anymore. I'm 26 and also a mother of one. If you really want to do it and work somewhere that you can have one, then go ahead. Otherwise I'd say just get your belly button or nipples pierced instead. You can hide those...but let me tell you that the nipple piercing hurts like HELL! and it will hurt for a long time.

i got the bottom of my lip done and to be honest it looks much beter and less chavy as well as when its done at the top it looks awful! now it does not hurt that much and i wouldnt advice taking it out until about 3 months then its fully healed! and also i would say wear a hoop as well because the balls on the studs always come loose and you end up swallowing it or eating it with your food. like all percing take care of it use hot salt water once a day and get a cotton bud and just gently go round the piercing good luck

i had my upper lip pierced and when i removed it i got my lower lip done. i loved both piercings but both really damaged my gums and teeth i have mine out over a year and my gums still havnt healed properly. taking it out after its healed isnt advisable because the hole closes up so fast so it hurts putting it in again. its not something i would do again, its just not worth the agro even if it does look good.

i like piercings, but i have a few of my own, so obviously i'm biased
a lip piercing takes 2 to 3 months to heal, they probably won't want you to wear it at work either.
you can take it out then, but you don't want to take it out for a very long time.
