Mary Shelley (Note the capital letters) took the idea from physics, see the dictionary, like others had done to describe a similar process in her creation, or fictionally, Dr. Frankenstein's creation, The Monster. It's an electrical and mineral combination and used in industry. It was appropriate since she was employng an electrical storm in her narrative.

I believe it was electricity. It was used to animate the 'monster'.
