Take the time to go to the store and play them in your price range. Buy at the store, not online. I've found that you can absolutely find a super guitar that plays every bit as well as one that costs twice as much or more if you're patient. Its true that more expensive guitars usually play and sound better than cheap ones, but its a numbers game (many expensive guits sound and play good where fewer less expensive ones will do the same thing).
I love the action of BC Rich's, some washburns, and you could look at the heavy metal fender strats and teles in that range.
Its all about the action and how well it stays in tune. A little variety in pick-ups helps, but not essential since that style of music doesn't require a large variety of sounds. Stick with single coils pick-ups for your main sound (probably stay away from les pauls unless you just love them).

good luck

Go to: www.musiciansfriend.com
There's a 10-60% Sale going on right now---might get reduced shipping too!
Go to your local Guitar Center(if you got one in town) check the neck and action(get some hands on!) out on some popular models you can purchase from Musicians Friend.
Dude! Piss on that buy at the store crap! You can find a mean axe in a pawn shop--you go with what sounds and feels good to you!
Good luck!

You should look at an Epiphone Les Paul Standard. Maybe a Fender Standard Stratocaster with humbuckers. Stay away from BC Rich. They may look "metal", but they're really gimmicky, and they won't give you a decent tone unless you cover it up with crazy amounts of gain.

check musiciansfriend.com they have a decent selection for decent prices. I recommend a Ibanez IJX121. You can get it in a starter pack for about $299.
