My fiance's grandmother had a hernia, and had surgery to repair it. The mesh stuff they repaired it with isnt holding and they are not going to do anything else to fix it. What does this mean, im not familiar with anything about a hernia. She is very old and im just wondering if she will be ok or is this something that could cause her to die??

A hernia is not all that life threatening, especially if one is older and less active. Chances are your grandmother doesn't do much heavy lifting or go to the racket ball court every day. The doctors probably believe that the risk of another operation outweigh the potential benefits.

I'm surprised it isn't holding. Usually the mesh becomes embedded into the rest of the tissue as tissue growth begins. That is what I have and it's been 22 years now. Maybe the grandmother is too old for surgery. Tell her to call her insurance and tell them the diagnosis and that she wants a second opinion. They usually always pay for it.
Good Luck!

Most of the time with a hernia they put a screen in your stomach to hold in your intestines. I don't know why they aren't repairing this though. This happened to my grandmother once and they replaced the broken screen with a stronger one.

People can live many years with unrepaired hernias. Her doctors have just decided that it is not worth the risk to her for more surgery.
