you touch anything out of metal? Like the kitchen sink, the car.... it happens all the time to me. I heard once it's because of the dry air, but I don't understand why.
So, why?

static electricity builds up especially when the air is dry. more likely during the winter when you have the heat on drying the air out.
I like to build it up while walking around on the carpet and then touch my cat to see the sparks. even more cool is when the lights are out, cat is in my lap, you can see the electric sparks shooting off of them when I pet them. really fascinating.

Its from the carpeting happens when I go to touch the light switch

It is called static electricity. It happens mainly when you walk across a rug.

static, from the dry air....My granddaughter has a metal chain that hangs down from her light, and every time I go into her room, it zaps me in the head!!!

simply static electricity buildup. As soon as you make a connection to something that is grounded, you get a shock.
